The desired position of a patient’s breast implants in relation to the chest muscle tissue is determined in advance of the surgery, during the breast implant consultation.
In general, there are four locations that the breast implants can be placed in relation to the muscle. There are advantages and disadvantages to all placement positions, which are also discussed at the consultation.
The breast implants can be placed above the muscle, partially below the muscle, below the fascia, or completely below the muscle. The fascia is the covering around the muscle.
The placement below the fascia is deeper than above the muscle placement, and it is more superficial than below or partially below the muscle.
